In my opinion, the theme of organic food products has a direct affect and strong connection to the theme of freedom for each person to make decisions for himself and his environment. Every time a consumer buys food, he has the possibility to pay a premium for products which are marked with an organic label. Being able to do so doing enables him to support companies who use this label to show their well concerned regards towards the ecology and environment. It is my hope for every consumer to understand that what he buys and where he buys it does not only affect his own private situation, but also his environment and furthermore the environment of the producing country. Therefore, purchasing goods is also a political action. In every case, it can not be said that organic food products are better than their conventional counterparts, however in most cases I hold the assumption that they are. This is why every consumer should understand the basic knowledge about production of foods, meaning of different labels, and the consequences of transportation routes and forms. Otherwise, a consumer will not be able to assess his own realistic opinion and make wise decisions about these themes. Education is necessary, particularly in the early stages of childhood; because it is then easier to begin thinking about good ways of consuming before a person has established unreflected consumer patterns, constructed from the norm of society. These stereotypical decision making tactics are very difficult to change once socialized into a person.
Marimo-Network informs the consumer and firms of knowledge on organic products and makes this information known to the public for the safe and efficient decision making process. A major part of our research focuses on China, since we assume that organic products from China will play an important role in the future. Unfortunately still there is not much knowledge available about most details which should be discussed in my opinion. The first conclusions about organic food in China will be published on this site in 2009.
